Asphalt Removal or Overlay?
Looking to enhance the look of your driveway? There are two options to consider when planning to restore the surface of your existing asphalt pavement. Option one: completely replace the existing asphalt. Alternatively, prepare the existing asphalt surface and apply an overlay on top of it. At A&M Asphalt Paving in Crofton MD we are experts in both procedures. Here are a few things you should know about each option before making a decision.
Tearing out an old asphalt driveway and installing a new one is the best way to restore a driveway, parking lot, or paved area. This method is expensive compared to resurfacing. However, it offers more long-lasting results.
During asphalt removal, we completely remove the old asphalt and then lay a 4″ layer of gravel for good drainage. Next, we apply a course of compacted asphalt to act as a base before adding a surface layer of crushed asphalt on top of it.
This technique is not as long-lasting as removing the old driveway, but it offers a cost savings. However, when done well, this option still delivers a durable driveway that can rival a freshly installed asphalt pavement.
If you consider this option, the main point of focus should be why the current driveway is failing. A thorough inspection should be carried out to determine if the base asphalt is strong enough to support the overlay. If you just put new asphalt on top of existing problems, you’ll only make the problem worse instead of solving it.
The existing surface needs proper preparation to prepare for bonding with the overlay. It should be inspected, cleaned, repaired, leveled, and then coated with a binding agent. The existing pavement won’t provide adequate structural support to an overlay if that’s not done. The results will be premature driveway failure through cracks and other deformations.
